UIL Legislative Council Meeting this weekend

I will be attending the UIL Legislative Council Meeting on Sunday and Monday in Austin to observe alongside the director of the baseball coaches association who also still teaches part time at my school. There is a softball issue up for a vote concerning adding two extra days at the beginning of our practice season in order to conduct tryouts. I will not be speaking on this issue, but will report on the debate (if there is any) on my blog on the www.texasprepsoftball.net website. I have attached the proposal to this email.

PROPOSAL

TFCA Membership

I will be sending out membership cards and receipts to those who have sent me a membership form on Monday for the 2009 season. You can go to www.tfcasoftball.com for a membership form if you would still like to join.

TFCA CLINIC ANNOUNCEMENT – NEW DATE:

We will have the 1st TFCA Fall Coaches Clinic this Saturday, September 27, 2008, at Burleson HS. It was rescheduled from the 13th due to the landfall of Hurricane Ike. The times are still the same as for the 13th and they are posted below. Also, you can still come to the clinic if you haven’t paid ahead of time, or have contacted any of the TFCA officers – I will be there to take fees for the clinc and TFCA dues. Clinic is $25 and 2008-2009 dues are $20.

NO OPEN DATES TODAY – PLEASE READ THE NEWS FOR TODAY – I WILL POST OPEN DATES TOMORROW! (I still have the open dates sent to me on Friday and they will go out tomorrow morning. I just think this news is very important to all of us and scheduling can wait one day. I hope that is fine with everyone.)

HURRICANE IKE NEWS:

Many school districts in the Houston-Galveston and the Golden Triangle areas are still out of school because of damage and/or lack of electricity due to the storm. I have received several emails from coaches who are back online and they are very thankful that they have survived the storm. I went to my parents’ house in Sugar Land for the 1st time since the storm over the weekend and saw a lot of damage from the highway on my way into Houston . Television today said that over 1.5 million customers are still without power which means about 50% that lost power last Saturday are still without power today.

Softball Coaches in the affected areas: If you are getting this and you are in need of any supplies or help for you and your family, please let me know and I will forward information to our fellow coaches to see what we can do to help.

If you know of softball coaches who are in need of help and they can’t contact me, please let me and them know and we can try to reach them to help them out.

As of tonight, I have heard from the following coaches or others have talked to them and know that they are safe from the storm:

Baytown Lee, Sweeny, West Columbia, Fort Bend Elkins, Fort Bend Clements, Bellaire, Magnolia, Tomball, Friendswood, The Woodlands.

Coaches in affected areas can also contact me to let me know you are doing fine and I will relay that information to everyone. If you have news or a story to relay to everyone, I will do that also!

We need to keep these coaches, families, students, and communities in our thoughts and prayers for a quick recovery. Just to show how severe the situation still is in that part of our great state, I have compiled a list from the local news websites about schools who have been out over a week and when they will start again.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION CONCERNING TFCA CLINIC ON SATURDAY

Because of the impending landfall of Hurricane Ike, the TFCA Fall Clinic will be postponed. We do not want our fellow coaches who are planning to come to be put in any danger by being on the highway during the evacuation traffic and when the hurricane blows all the way into central Texas . I have not cashed any of the checks yet and will wait until we have the clinic. We should have a decision on an alternate date in the next couple of days.

HURRICANE IKE:

We wish those who are in the path of the hurricane the best of luck in your preparations and evacuation. Our prayers are with all of you on the coast and in the path of the storm.

TFCA REGISTRATION AND SUMMER MEETING MINUTES

Attached is a copy of the 2008-2009 TFCA REGISTRATION FORM. The dues for the upcoming year are still $20. The organization has had its initial setup thanks to efforts and work of Tommy Edmondson, so the organization is now on solid ground. The next year we will be prioritizing our goals and starting our first fall / offseason clinic. We will also attend the meetings of the UIL Legislative Committee in order to keep up to date on the work of the UIL for our sport and want to be a very positive voice for our coaches and help the UIL and all other coaching organizations if they need and ask for our help.
